Student Library Ownership and Building the Communicative Commons

ABSTRACT

Based on William Birdsall's research on the Communicative Commons (2010), this research moves toward reworking the commons model by integrating classical definitions of the commons with theories of psychological ownership, the Information/Learning Commons, and engaged learning and citizenship behaviors. This research seeks to enable institutions without the financial resources for physical renovations projects to create an environment in their libraries capable of training students to become citizen-scholars by providing the goal of increasing student ownership over library resources. It argues that prioritizing student participation within the library may be the best preparation for participation in the wider cultural commons post-graduation.     

Strategic Planning and Management:

This article presents the rationale of a large, urban, culturally diverse, comprehensive university for adopting a formal strategic planning and management methodology. The external forces and the internal initiatives that contributed to the decision to do formal planning are listed. The planning model is described and the current status of the planning and management process is portrayed. The way in which the library fits into the campuswide process is depicted and planning and management challenges that await a new Librarian are presented. The paper concludes with observations regarding the need for a regional assessment of the potential for an electronic library consortium and the need for a National Research and Education Network.

长期以来,省科学院文献情报服务处于相对落后状态,而需求广泛存在:科研层面需求侧重于文献信息的获取,决策与管理层面需求侧重于宏观的综合分析。中国科学院国家科学图书馆与省科学院在文献资源保障服务、信息素质培训、战略决策情报服务、文献情报队伍建设等方面开展了服务合作,并以责任馆员、签订合作协议和挂牌成立服务站、成立全国科学院联盟文献情报分会等方式建立合作机制,保障合作的有效推进,服务效果显著。     

微博信息可信度分析研究综述

简述微博信息可信度研究的背景和意义,并对微博信息可信度分析等相关概念进行界定;对微博信息可信度的研究成果进行梳理,指出这些研究的不足,并认为微博信息可信度分析的关键问题是微博信息特征的提取和可信度分析方法的设计;结合微博信息的特点及已有研究成果,指出微博信息可信度分析的核心技术包括自然语言处理、社会网络分析、机器学习与数据挖掘等;最后总结全文,对微博信息可信度分析的未来发展方向进行展望,为进一步研究提供参考。     

用户信息搜寻模式与数字图书馆可用性评价

将信息搜寻的4种模式引入数字图书馆可用性评价中,构建基于用户信息搜寻模式的数字图书馆可用性评价指标体系,通过两种难度级别的搜索实验、浏览实验和追踪实验以及问卷调查,获取用户利用数字图书馆资源的信息搜寻行为数据,从而实施数字图书馆可用性评价。     

合作信息查寻与检索中知识共享的博弈学习机制研究

以二人合作为对象,讨论合作信息查寻与检索中知识共享的博弈学习机制,在简化的假设条件下,分别就检索过程共享及检索结果共享构建知识共享的博弈学习模型并求最优解。研究表明:学习是参与者的优选策略,共享在一定激励条件下才能发生;在一定的激励机制或约束条件下,参与者有逐渐走向合作博弈学习的趋势并到达“共享”与“学习”均衡。     

Integrating an Informationist Into Graduate Education: Case Study With Preliminary Results

An informationist taught, consulted, and mentored graduate students enrolled in a graduate research project course in Health Informatics. An observational cohort study was conducted to determine the effect of an early (first term) and continued (subsequent term) exposure of course-integrated instruction, individual consultations, information resource mentoring, and educational collaboration partnership on the development of information literacy, research skills, and integrative competencies in graduate students. Student progress was assessed by survey, class performance, and faculty feedback. The course-integrated lectures, consultations, mentoring, and educational partnership between the informationist and academic advisors increased the students’ course performance, information literacy, and research skills in graduate students.     

Health Sciences Librarians' Research on Medical Students' Use of Information for Their Studies at The Medical School,University of Queensland,Australia

This study reports the findings of research undertaken by health sciences librarians at the University of Queensland Library into how medical students use information for their studies, particularly resources and services provided by the Library. The methods utilized were an online survey and focus groups. Results indicated that students favor print resources over electronic, value accessing resources on a one-stop basis, and prefer training to be delivered flexibly. The implication of these results for future resource selection, service provision, and instructional design and delivery is discussed.     

Knowledge and Utilization of the United States National Library of Medicine's Biomedical Information Products and Services Among African Health Sciences Librarians

The United States National Library of Medicine (NLM) has the largest collection of biomedical information products and services in the world. Little is known of the extent to which librarians in sub-Saharan Africa are aware of and use these resources. The study's aim was to assess knowledge and frequency of use of NLM's biomedical information products and services among African librarians. Forty-three of the 50 delegates at the 11th biannual Congress of the Association of Health Information and Libraries in Africa (AHILA) participated in the study. The findings showed that participants' knowledge of NLM information products and services was low and that there is a need for increased awareness and training in the use of NLM's information products and services in order for users on the African continent to effectively benefit from them.
